Hedge plants
Hjorthede Nursery produces good strong stock for hedges, some are translocated and others are planted with increased spacing. We can meet most needs and here are some examples:
Classic deciduous hedge plants (planted typically 4 pr. per meter)
Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
Field Maple (Acer campestre)
Hawthorn (Crategus monogyna)
Copper beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea')
Classic evergreen hedge plants (planted typically 4-8 pr. per meter)
Yew (Taxus baccata)
Privet (Ligustrum vulgare - semi evergreen)
Thuja (Thuja occidentalis)
Shrubs for land demarcation (species which can be cut, but not necessarily)
Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa)
Sargent's apple (Malus sargentii)
Wild roses (Rosa sp.)
Juneberry (Amelanchier spicata)
Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)
Mountain Currant (Ribes alpinum)
Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
Snowberry (Symphoricarpus albus)
Potentil (Potentilla sp.)
Planting Time
Hedges of deciduous species are planted from mid-October, beech from the 1st November. Planting can continue through the winter (provided the soil is not frozen) until the 1st June (we keep the plants in cold storage, so they do not leaf.) Hedges of coniferous species can be planted from mid September to late May, depending on weather conditions during winter where the ground may be frozen.
